Dear Sir, I beg to inform you that the President and Fellows of theRoyal College of Physicians of Ireland have amended in someparticulars, and then adopted as amended, the report of theConference Committee with the Royal College of Surgeons inIreland held on the 28th ult. The amendments adopted by this College are set out in theaccompanying paper. There are only two of these amendments which in any wayalter the scope of the report as adopted by the ConferenceCommittee. The President and Fellows are of opinion that the 'Extern-Examiner' should set the paper or papers in conjunction withthe Professor. This is the procedure adopted in the Uni-versitites of Dublin, Oxford and Cambridge, and in the formerUniversity at all events the procedure has been attended with (2). benefit to the examinations. In regard to the selection of clinical cases the President andFellows feel that the privilege accorded to the Professor ismore theoretical than real since the clinical cases that areavailable have usually to be selected. The limitation of theselection to the Professor might hence be attended with incon-venience, since if that course were adopted no student could beginhis study of the patients until after the arrival of the Professor.Were the Professor unavoidably prevented from attending at theopening of the examination quite an unnecessary delay might becaused. The President and Fellows feel that the amendments they areintroducing do not in any way interfere with the objects desiredby the Colleges that the Professors of the Schools of Surgeryof the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland should have thesame influence in the examinations of the Students as aProfessor in a University usually has.
