His brother Francis Sherry died the previous year in France and his mother Bridget died shortly after she heard of Edward's injury. He was not able to make it home for the funeral.</p>

            note&gt;Monday   F. Ward <lb/>County of London War Hospital <lb/>Epsom Surrey    Dear James   Just a few lines to let you know <lb/>I am getting on all right. I have been up and <lb/>moving about this last few days, trifling weak <lb/>though, these butcherings does make one feel <lb/>that way. Thanks very much for papers. I am <lb/>pleased, to see that although you are not directly <lb/>engaged on combatant service you are doing <lb/>something to help those, whose misfortune it has <lb/>been to come in contact with <sic>Allemand</sic> and <lb/>get out second best. I read also with delight <lb/>Jack's success at the recent Intermediate exams <lb/>if he has another in the juniors grade I <lb/>trust he may distinguish himself still more.    The sudden demise of Bob <seg type="unclear">Coyle</seg> was rather <lb/>unfortunate he was a decent chap his first <lb/>wife was Druggan a sister of Mrs Corrs

            I have an occasional letter from the <seg type="foreign">Pater</seg> <lb/>he's <seg type="foreign">"Bon"</seg> but a little lonely, Alice and Daisy <lb/>are doing there best to keep the population up. <lb/>more power to their wheel I suppose there is <lb/>not as much of you left as would stick a <lb/>stamp never mind old boy you have have done <lb/>your bit.   Mr <seg type="foreign">Zepplin</seg> has not come near us this <lb/>weekend. I think the booze was too strong <lb/>for him at <sic>Potters....Bar</sic>. Gaw blime Bill <lb/>you should 'ear the row these 'ere guns kick <lb/>up when 'e comes over. 'E knows the reception <lb/>he gets when 'e comes to Blighty.   I hope Bridgie and all the kids are well <lb/>give my regards to them, wishing to find them in <lb/>the pink on my next visit to the Emerald Isle. <lb/>which may not be far distant;when I get a few gallops <lb/>round the Derby Course I'll be gig. I have had <lb/>no lemon squash for a long time nevertheless excuse <lb/>scribbles. Write me soon.    Yours loving Br   HE Sherry
