This is a letter to Dr Kathleen Lynn (1874-1955) from John Pedder, of the Home Office at Whitehall. Dr Kathleen Lynn was a medical practitioner, a suffragist, a nationalist, and a revolutionary. Lynn was Chief Medical Officer of the Irish Citizen Army during Easter 1916, and was a part of the City Hall garrison, of which she took command of the garrison after the death of Seán Connolly on the first day of the Rising. After independence, Lynn dedicated much time and energy towards the improvement of public health, and played a significant role in the eradication of tuberculosis in Ireland.

In this letter, Pedder informs Dr Lynn that she has been released from an undertaking she had given on July 8. The undertaking had required her to leave Ireland for Bath, England, as soon as her ill sister had recovered her health. The envelope of the letter has Dr Lynn's Rathmines address crossed out and replaced with her Bath address, suggesting that she had already returned to England.
