This letter is part of a large correspondence from Captain James Davidson to his parents. Davidson, who was Managing Director of the Sirocco Engineering Works in Belfast, served with 13 Royal Irish Rifles and the Machine Gun Corps. His letters describe his experiences while training in England and serving in France. He was killed on 1 July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Davidson discusses fighting in the front and reserve trenches, and in particular refers to use of a Hyposcope and several types of guns and pistols.

 a19 FebruaryDEW 10/2/16 My dear Father — I havejust received your letterof 5th February & as I have afew minutes to spare atpresent am replying atonce. As regards theHyposocpe I dont thinkyou need take any furtherspecial trouble about thesefor with the introduction ofthe Lewis gun which is employedin the front trenches, thepractice now is to use theVickers guns in the support& reserve trenches in whichpositions there is really nonecessity for using the Hyposcope.As you will have heard, weare now in the trenches& I have 8 guns actually 2in positions the remainderbeing in reserve. By daywe only fire indirect fire, thatis from positions concealedfrom the enemy & by nightwhen we employ some of theothers there is no necessityfor a Hyposcope. We haveonly got 4 of the Gardin Hyposcopesin the Coy (there was only 1 perBatt) but I dont expect weshall ever use them, at anyrate not in our presentpositions. The Govt.patternissued with the guns is notat all satisfactory. The guncannot be fired by one man.One man holds the handlesof the Hyposcope — which is nothingmore or less than a boxperiscope clapmed to the gun —& a second man operates a 3lever to release the safetycatch & press the firing lever.The Gardiner Hyposcope issuperior in every way & wehave done some quite goodshooting with it on the rangebut mechanically it requiresimprovement. I altered oneso as to make the top mirroradjustable & fitted a newbottom mirror of same sizeas top one with much improvedresults. Unless the top mirrorcan be adjusted it is impossibleto bring the rear sight inline with foresight. Howeveras already mentioned we arenot using the Hyposcopes atall owing to the differentmethod now adopted in usingthe Vickers guns & so asthe W O seem to have set 4themselves against the Gardinerpattern I should let thematter drop. As very gladto hear the Trench pistol isnow nearing completion —it will be 'great' to get at theGermans with something new.They have so far alsways beenthe first in this line. I amafraid however we wont beable to experiment on thisparticular part of the linefor the trenches are for themost part about 400 ydsapart. There is not muchrifle fire but plenty of artillery.I had a rather narrow escapethis morning with 2 of myofficers & a Corp. We wereinspecting one of the oldgun emplacements — theone nearest the firing line 5about 200 yds in rear — & Iwas taking some bearingswith a view to straffing aa part of the German supporttrenches when suddenly 2 guns opened fire onus with 15 lb shells. Fortunatelyfor us they did not get adirect hit on the emplacementbut the shells hit some of themwithin 10 yds & we werewell spattered with earth &fragments of stones etcAn adjoining old Frenchgun emplacement whichwas very conspicuous &which the Germans evidentlytook to be the one we wereinspecting — for they musthave observed something —was broken up. Therewas no near communication 6trench & the trenches werevery shallow & came to ablind end but betweenthe shots we scooted alongas far we could get fromthe gun emplacement &lay down in the mud. Theshelling went on for about1/2 hr — about 40 shells inall — & as they were alldropping about 20 - 25 ydsaway it was certainly farfrom comfortable butvery exciting. The Corphad an almost miraculousescape — he ran the otherway to his dugout & justas he got to the entrancea shell landed on theparapet beside him butdid not explode &rolled down at his feet 7where I saw it later.At present I am having moreto do than I can well get through.It is seldom I am in bedtill midnight & then up at7 am or before. There areso many returns to be sent inbesides all the organisationof work etc & the worst of itis one feels that the most ofthese returns are never evenlooked at.Have had a note from Kathleenbut am afraid this will haveto do for all as I wont havetime to write again for somedays.
