            <note type="summary">
               <p>This letter was written by George M. Marshall (1878-1936) a chemist from Strabane. The letter was addressed to the under-Secretary for Ireland, Sir Robert Chalmers (1858-1938). Chalmers was sent to Ireland as under-secretary, replacing Sir Matthew Nathan who had resigned along with Augustine Birrell, his chief secretary following the Easter Rising in 1916.
In this letter Marshall refers to a cheque he received two days ago for being a crown witness. Marshall is not satisfied with the amount paid as he had no assistant to take his place during his absence and had to pay somebody to come in. He is thus out of pocket and asks Chalmers to rectify the situation.</p>
