<p>Letter from Herbert Pim (1883-1950) to John Sweetman (1884-1936). Pim published a pamphlet series entitled 'Tracts of our times', including writings by Patrick Pearse, and in early 1916 founded the literary and political monthly, 'The Irishman'. He joined the Volunteer muster in Coalisland at Easter 1916, and was arrested after the Rising and deported to Reading gaol. He was released in September 1916. Sweetman was a member of Sinn Féin and patron to Arthur Griffith. In 1915 he spoke out against conscription and was arrested after the 1916 Rising and interned in England until the end of May 1916. Pim is sending Sweetman a copy of correspondence with Alderman Tom Kelly (1868-1942) and is confirming to Sweetman that he has decided to take his advice in a matter. Pim also discusses how he has killed the Nation League. </p>

65, University Road, Belfast, 12th October 1916. My dear Mr. Sweetman, I enclose copy of my correspondence with <lb/>Alderman Kelly, who <sic>apparenly</sic> represents the existing council <lb/>members. You will observe that I have taken the line which <lb/>your foresight predicted that I should be compelled to take. Please return the correspondence. I hope the current <lb/>issue of <hi rend="underline">The Irishman</hi> pleases you. We have killed the Nation <lb/>League, at any rate, if we may judge by the meeting which broke <lb/>up in Dublin last night. This disaster was not reported in the <lb/><hi rend="underline">Independent,</hi> which must feel pretty sick at having backed the <lb/>wrong horse. With kindest regards, <lb/>Yours very sincerely, <hi rend="underline">Herbert M Pim</hi>
