31 Guild St.<lb/> North Wall, Dublin. 10th May 1916 Hon Sir I beg to bring the following facts about your <lb/> notice. On Tuesday morning <lb/> May 2nd in or about 6 o clock<lb/> I was coming from Kingsbridge <lb/> Railway Station. I was challenged <lb/> on a couple of occasions by<lb/> some members of the staffordshire <lb/> regiment who were on duty and <lb/> allowed to proceed. When I <lb/> arrived at Arron Quay I was <lb/> held up by three members of the <lb/> same regiment and brought <lb/> round to the <sic>rere</sic> of Arron's <lb/> Quay R C Church and these <lb/> three soldiers searched my pockets in a very rough manner<lb/> I had on my person the sum<lb/> of £13 in Bank notes, on the<lb/> Bank of Ireland and Provincial<lb/> Bank, and a sum of about<lb/> 3£ in copper & others. They<lb/> forcibly took this from me, along<lb/> with some other articles including<lb/> cigarettes. I was satisfied from<lb/> information I received the <seg type="unclear">Times</seg><lb/> evening that a train would leave<lb/> Kingsbridge for Cork at 6.30 am<lb/> and it was it that brought me <lb/> there. When I arrived there I<lb/> made inquiries from a Corporal on<lb/> duty & he very kindly made inquiries<lb/> and informed me that the train was<lb/> cancelled & it was, on my return <lb/> home that the incident referred<lb/> to took place. The amount<lb/> stolen from me represented a

years hard savings and I will <lb/> esteem it a favour if you will <lb/> cause inquiries to be made into the <lb/> matter in order that recompense <lb/> may be made me as it means <lb/> a big loss to me in my <lb/> circumstances. I have the honour to be <lb/> Your Obedient Servant Thomas Smyth.
