This is a letter from Alice Maud Alexander (b.1868). The letter is written during the period of martial law in Ireland following the Easter Rising. The letter regards the application on the part of Alexander for a permit to travel to Ireland. In the letter Alexander states that she wishes to return to her position as companion to Emily Maud Charlotte Wolfe (1892-1980), a girl from a wealthy farming family. Alexander goes on to state that she had been directed to contact the Irish Office to receive a permit to travel back to Ireland to take up the position and wishes to leave for Ireland the following week.

 15.5.16 Dear Sir. I am desirous of returning to my post as Companion to Miss Wolfe Forenaughts, Naas, Co. Kildare. I have been told that it is necessary to get a pass before going through Dublin. As the police have no authority to issue them here, I have been referred to the Irish Office. If you can pro- vide me with one will you kindly forward it, or inform me what I am to do.
