This is a letter from John J Taylor (b. 1860), Principle Clerk for the Chief Secretary's Office, to Lord Basil Blackwood (1870-1917), a British Lawyer and Civil Servant who died a the battle of Ypres in 1917. The letter discusses the payment of Blackwood for his work as Private Secretary to the household of Ivor Guest (1873-1939), the Lord Lieutenant. It goes on to discuss the amount he is to be paid and the tax deducted. Enclosed is an account of his payment.

 13th May, 1916 Dear Lord Basil Blackwood, In reply to your letter of the 7th instant i was informed by the Paymaster's General's Office that the payments to you on account of salary as Private Secretary from the Vote for the Household of the Lord Lieutenant during the year 1915-6 amounted to £773:2:6 (gross) and that the tax deducted amounted to £70:4:2. The tax was at the rate of 1s.6d. in the £ plus 20%. When taxing your salary for the current quarter the assessor will make allowance for the excess tax deducted amounting to 12s.7d.
