               <p>This is a letter from John J Taylor (b. 1860), Principle Clerk for the Chief Secretary's Office, to Lord Basil Blackwood (1870-1917), a British Lawyer and Civil Servant who died a the battle of Ypres in 1917. The letter discusses the payment of Blackwood for his work as Private Secretary to the household of Ivor Guest (1873-1939), the Lord Lieutenant. It goes on to discuss the amount he is to be paid and the tax deducted. Enclosed is an account of his payment.</p>

             13th May, 1916   Dear Lord Basil Blackwood,   In reply to your letter of the<lb/> 7th instant i was informed by the Paymaster's General's Office<lb/> that the payments to you on account of salary as Private<lb/> Secretary from the Vote for the Household of the Lord<lb/> Lieutenant during the year 1915-6 amounted to £773:2:6<lb/> (gross) and that the tax deducted amounted to £70:4:2. The<lb/> tax was at the rate of 1s.6d. in the £ plus 20%. When<lb/> taxing your salary for the current quarter the assessor<lb/> will make allowance for the excess tax deducted amounting<lb/> to 12s.7d.   Yours sincerely,   (Sd) J.J. Taylor
