               <p>This letter was written by Andrew Philip Magill (1871-1941) and sent to Cecil Harmsworth (1869-1948). 
Magill was a civil servant and held the position of private secretary for successive chief secretaries of Ireland until his transfer to the Northern Irish Civil Service in 1921.
Harmsworth was a British politician and the the 1st Baron of Harmsworth.
In the letter Magill is acknowledging Harmsworth's recommendation, on the behalf of  John Robert O'Connell (1868-1943), for the position of chief crown solicitor.</p>

Dear Mr. Harmsworth,   I am desired by Mr. Birrell to acknowledge the <lb/>receipt of your letter of 31st ultimo, and to say <lb/>that he has taken note of your recommendation of <lb/>Sir J. R. O'Connell for appointment as Chief Crown <lb/>Solicitor for Ireland, and his claims will be fully <lb/>considered, but, as you are probably aware, the <lb/>number of applicants for the post is very large.
