This letter was written by William Stewart Collis (1860-1947) a solicitor from the firm Collis & Ward. The letter is addressed to Attorney General John Gordon (1849-1922). Gordon had been appointed attorney general in 1915 but vacated the position a year later. His successor, James Campbell (1851-1931), took over on Monday 24 April, the first day of the Easter Rising. The letter contains Collis' bid to apply for the position of chief crown solicitor following the death of Malachy Kelly (1851-1916). With this letter Collis has included thirteen testimonials from 1889 when he was applying for the position of solicitor to the Irish Land Commission.
