Desmond FitzGerald (1888-1947) was an Irish Volunteer and was present in the GPO during the Easter Rising. He was subsequently arrested, court-martialed and sentenced to 20 years Penal Servitude, later commuted to 10 years. Mabel FitzGerald (1884-1957) was the wife of Desmond Fitzgerald. At the time of this letter Desmond FitzGerald was in HM Prison, Dartmoor, England. Reade, acknowledges Mrs. FitzGerald's postcard of 18 July and advises as to when a visit might be allowed, but tells her not to make any travel plans until such time as she has received an Official Visiting Order. He also writes in relation to some missing papers that Mrs. FitzGerald had enquired after.

H.M.Prison Dartmoor 20th July 1916 Madam I have to acknowledge receipt of your Post Card of 18.7.16 and to inform you in reply that q190 T.D.Fitzgerald will be due for a visit any week day after 17.9.16. provided he does not lose any marks. If a visit is contemplated, the Governor must be written to, and the journey must not be undertaken till the official Visiting Order has been received. The papers may have been taken by the Police or Military Authorities, with other papers, or possibly sent Publisher, by you, whilst he was in prison before.
