This letter is from the governor of Dartmoor prison, Major E. Reade, to Mabel FitzGerald (née Washington McConnell) (1884-1958), wife of politician and intellectual Desmond FitzGerald (1888-1947). Reade advises that Mrs FitzGerald's letter of 11 July has been stopped and detained by the censor. He passes a message from her husband regarding the possible location in the home of the 'Fairy Stories' and advises that Mr FitzGerald is in his 'usual health'.Desmond FitzGerald was a poet and a journalist belonging a group of Irish poets now known as the Imagists. Following his marriage to Mabel Washington McConnell (1884–1958) he became involved with Irish politics, arranging meetings for the Irish Volunteers. He later served in the GPO during the Easter Rising, being placed in charge of the garrison's food supply. He initially escaped arrest after the Rising but was soon rounded up and imprisoned in Mountjoy, Dartmoor, Maidstone, Lewes and Portland.
