Letter from Lord Cavan (1865-1946) to John Redmond (1856-1918). informing Redmond that the Guards Division is now part of his command. Cavan feels the demand for reinforcements is growing and says it would be a good step forward if they could reinforce while Germany can't.Frederick Rudolf Lambart, 10th Earl of Cavan, was sent to the front as a major-general to take part in the First Battle of Ypres in October 1914. By 1916 Cavan was placed at the head of XIV Corps and took part in the Battle of the Somme that summer. He was made a Grand Officer of the Belgian Order of the Crown on 2 November 1916 and appointed a Knight of the Order of St Patrick in November 1916.John Redmond (1856-1918) was an MP and leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party. He was instrumental in securing the promise of Home Rule from Asquith's liberal government. Upon the outbreak of war, Redmond addressed a group of Irish Volunteers at Woodenbridge, Co. Wicklow, encouraging them to fight with the British Army to ensure the implementation of Home Rule. Redmond's words split the Irish Volunteers across the country. The Easter Rising shocked Redmond, who condemned it bitterly. Nonetheless he appealed for leniency towards those who had not been involved in planning the Rising.

 HQ XIV Corps . Feb.8. Dear Mr. Redmond The Guards will be a part of my Corps directly. I need not say how delighted I am. We have a difficult bit — in the extreme North — but I hope we shall not make a hash of it. The other 2 Divn. are excellent too. I read the Galway meeting and the header there on in the 'Freeman's Journal'. Very hopeful — but I am sure the demand for reinforcements is bound to be very great by the autumn — & if we can reinforce when Germany can't — we shall have made a big step forward.
