This letter was written by Garret Sheehan (b. 1841) regarding his prosecution for having possession of a firearm. Sheehan maintains that he is innocent of the charge and would not have been accused if he was a farmer or merchant's son. Sheehan believes that the charge was a concoction between Daniel Murphy and the sergeant.

 14/2/1916 Cloughane Knocknagoshel Co Kerry Dear Sir I beg to draw your attention to a false case of which I have been a victim. On the 11th day of Decr - 1915, on proceeding to a place called Gortroe, Knocknagoshel North, to hear about a friend, and Niece of mine who was shot at the Battle of Mons when I was pursued by 2 police, and charged with having a gun, of which I had been, purely innocent, were I a farmers son, or a merchants son, they would not have charged me with having a gun of which I had not in my possession on that day. I would wish to know whether it is the farmers sons,or the labouring men have done the most, to help keep out the Common enemy of Ireland, and the British Empire, I can assure you that its only all a concocted matter between, a man named Daniel Murphy Knocknagoshel who seems to dislike me, and the present Rel Co Sergeant Linehan, who both owns a Greyhound for hunting Game hares They think that I, a man with licence, will shoot them all, I mean the hares. There is 15 years years, since I got first elevation licence from District Inspector Woods Castle -island, Co Kerry, and was not limited, and if you desire, a charac -ter of me who is 75 years of age, you may write Sergeant Foland or Sergeant Connell and though it's not the farmers sons. If I was a youth of 18 or 19 years so I would have been opposing the Germans In France or Flanders Long ago, and if my Services, are any value to you they are at your disposal. I would be very pleased if I had a reply from your Excellency for the 4th of February, being the day of trial. I Remain Dear Sir yours truly Garret Sheahan .
