               <p>The letter is from C. Spencer Smith to Gertrude Bannister (d.1950), a cousin of Sir Roger Casement (1864-1916). The letter is an official letter referring to arrangements to terminate Bannister's employment with the school.The letter was written while Casement was imprisoned after he had been arrested while landing on the coast of Kerry in a submarine on the eve of the Easter Rising. Bannister was heavily involved in raising public support for Casement during his trial for treason.</p>

                CLERK &amp; RECEIVER'S OFFICE 53, PALACE STREET,  VICTORIA, STREET. S.W.    July 31st 1916   Dear Miss Bannister,    I am in receipt of your letter of 29th inst and have submitted <lb/> it to the Chairman. By the Scheme for the regulation of the <lb/> Grey Coat Hospital, &amp; by your Contract of Service with the <lb/> Governors, the engagement is terminable by notice or on payment of <lb/> Salary in lieu of notice, which is not the same thing as 'dismissal'. <lb/> Clause 8 of your contract runs 'It shall not be necessary for either <lb/> party to state in such notice the reason for terminating this <lb/> agreement'; and the Board having given precise instructions the <lb/> Chairman regrets that he is unable to go further now.  <seg type="closer"> I am,<lb/> Faithfully yours,  C.Spencer Smith <lb/> Clerk. <lb/>  Miss Bannister,  36, Grosvenor Road,  S.W.  </seg><seg type="postscript"> P.S.
