Letter from Marie Martin (1892-1975) to her mother, Mary. Marie writes of accepting 4 badly wounded soldiers who were 'operated on' prior to their invalidation back to England; that they are short of orderlies and staff, and that they are opening more tents. She feels doing the right thing by working as a VAD. Marie Helena Martin, later known as 'Mother Mary,' was a volunteer nurse during the First World War. She served in field hospitals in Malta, Leeds, and France working for the British army and later went on to become the founder of the Medical Missionaries of Mary (MMM).

 Sunday 23rd 1916 My very fondest Mother Ever so many thanks for your letter. I am delighted to think you are away having a change & sincerely hope it will do you a great deal of good as I think you need one very badly. I am afraid I have left a few days without writing but we have had a terrible rush again & have not been off for the last few days, I am just off for an hour or so now so I am just writing to let you know I am very well. The convoy that came into my tent were fairly bad & had to have four operated on before they were able to go to England — but am glad to say 5 went today — but one of them was very bad & I'm afraid will suffer a great deal on the journey however he will make up for it when he gets to England to care & looking after. We have had a terrible rush & are very short of orderlys & staff as we are opening so many more tents. However we are only doing what everyone else is doing &we are very lucky to get off at all these times. I see they were advertising in every paper for V.A.D.s they cannot get enough I am so glad I came & feel I have done the right thing. I wasn't able to go to Mass today but I am getting up I hope for 6.30 tomorrow morning. Hoping this will find you & all A.1. Best of Love In haste Marie I shall answer letter in a day or two. M.
