               <p>Letter from Fr Willie Doyle to his father, Hugh Doyle regarding his life as a military chaplain in France. After describing the worsening weather conditions Fr Doyle writes about his troubled expedition to say mass for the Iniskillings as the Germans were shelling the local roads. Fr Willie Doyle served as a military chaplain with the 8th Battalion of the Royal Irish Fusiliers, 16th Irish Division. In April 1916 he was recommended for the Military Cross (MC) for helping to dig wounded men out of a collapsed shelter under fire. He moved to the 8th Battalion, Royal Dublin Fusiliers around Christmas, 1916. He was killed during the third battle of Ypres while going to the aid of a wounded man near Frezenberg and his body was never recovered. His name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot memorial, Zonnebeke, Belgium.</p>

              Many thanks <lb/>for Lena's <lb/>letter. B. E. Force, France. 10/3/'16. My dear Father, Before I begin my <lb/>budget I want to take back all the <lb/>nice things I said about the weather, <lb/>which has simply been on its worst <lb/>behaviour. The day after I wrote <lb/>to you we left our late billets to <lb/>come here, in a blinding snow <lb/>storm, and almost everyday since <lb/>snow has fallen. It melts during <lb/>the day, with the result that we are <lb/>living in slush, not too pleasant <lb/>for those who have not provided <lb/>themselves with a pair of 'gum' <lb/>boots, which make trudging <lb/>through the mud and water <lb/>quite a pleasure. I marched on with the 8 <hi rend="superscript">th</hi> Fusiliers <lb/>but as I have also charge of the 8 <hi rend="superscript">th</hi><lb/>Inniskillings my first step was
            <pb n="2" facs="L1916_1096_img_3272_2"/>
              to find out where they were <lb/>quartered, so as to arrange for <lb/>Mass the next day (Sunday). I <lb/>found them some from miles <lb/>away in what was once a flourish <lb/>ing town but now a mass of <lb/>ruins. In the midst of the deso— <lb/>lation stands a little convent of <lb/>Sisters of Charity, absolutely un <lb/>touched with the exception of <lb/>some broken panes of glass. The Superioress told me they had <lb/>had a charmed existence, shells <lb/>flying about in all directions, <lb/>one eventually having burst in <lb/>the garden but no one received <lb/>a scratch. She then brought me <lb/>into the parish church next <lb/>door, its roof &amp; walls pierced with <lb/>shell holes with bullet marks <lb/>on every side and pointed out <lb/>the alter where I was to celebrate <lb/>the following morning. On the <lb/>principle I suppose, of 'making <lb/>my flesh creep' she pointed
            <pb n="3" facs="L1916_1096_img_3272_3"/>
              out the spot behind the alter where a shell had <lb/>burst, smashing a big hole in <lb/>the wall and blowing the priest <lb/>into the middle of the congre <lb/>gation without hurting him <lb/>or them. However she told me <lb/>that the Germans had not bom— <lb/>barded the village for the past <lb/>twelve months; I began to breathe <lb/>freely again and went back <lb/>to my own quarters with a <lb/>light heart, little thinking of <lb/>what was in store for me the <lb/>following morning. Having finished my first Mass <lb/>at 9 I mounted my bicycle, which <lb/>I find sometimes more convenient <lb/>than a horse, and set out so as to <lb/>be with the Inniskillings at 11. <lb/>On the way I noticed that heavy <lb/>firing was going on ahead, <lb/>but it was only when I reached <lb/>a bend in the road that I <lb/>realized that the enemy were
            <pb n="4" facs="L1916_1096_img_3272_4"/>
              actually shelling the very spot <lb/>I had to pass! At the first arrow <lb/>some soldiers stopped me, saying <lb/>it was dangerous to go on; at the <lb/>moment I was wondering what <lb/>had become of the side of a vacant <lb/>house which had suddenly vanished <lb/>in a cloud of smoke and was <lb/>painfully aware of the close <lb/>proximity of high explosive <lb/>shells. Here was a fire; I know <lb/>my regiment was waiting me <lb/>in the village for Mass, and also <lb/>that half of them were going <lb/>to the trenches that afternoon <lb/>for the first time; if I did not
            <pb n="5" facs="L1916_1096_img_3272_5"/>
              turn up they would lose con— <lb/>fession and Holy Communion, <lb/>and the only way to reach them <lb/>was by the shell swept road. What really decided me was the thought <lb/>that I was carrying the Blessed <lb/>Sacrament and I felt that having <lb/>our Lord Himself with me no <lb/>harm could possibly come to <lb/>me. I mounted the bicycle and <lb/>faced the music. I don't want <lb/>you to think me very brave &amp; <lb/>courageous for I confess I felt <lb/>horribly afraid, but it was my <lb/>baptism of fire and and one needs <lb/>to grow accustomed to the sound <lb/>of bursting shells. Just then I <lb/>was wishing my regiment was <lb/>in <seg type="unclear">Gevier</seg> and every German gun <lb/>in the bottom of the Red Sea or <lb/>any other hot place. Call it a miracle if you <lb/>like but the moment I turned <lb/>the corner the guns ceased firing <lb/>and not a shell fell till I was
            <pb n="6" facs="L1916_1096_img_3272_6"/>
              safely in the village church — my <lb/>confidence in our Lord's protec— <lb/>tion was not misplaced. Naturally I did not know this <lb/>was going to happen, and it was <lb/>anything but pleasant riding <lb/>down the last stretch of road <lb/>listening for the scream of the <lb/>coming shell. Have you ever had <lb/>a night-mare in which you <lb/>were pursued by ten mad bulls, <lb/>while the faster you tried to run <lb/>the more your feet stuck in <lb/>the mud? These were just my <lb/>feelings as I pedalled down <lb/>that blessed road, which seemed <lb/>to grow longer &amp; longer the <lb/>further I went. At last I turned <lb/>the corner, reached the church &amp; <lb/>had just begun Mass when <lb/>down came the hail of shells <lb/>once more. One or two must <lb/>have burst very close judging <lb/>by the way the walls shook,
            <pb n="7" facs="L1916_1096_img_3272_7"/>
              but I felt quite happy and <lb/>quite ready to be blown from <lb/>the alter, for I saw a fine <lb/>plump Freench woman just behind <lb/>me, she might have been killed <lb/>but I was quite safe. I mention this little adventure <lb/>as I think it will console you <lb/>as it has consoled me, showing <lb/>that all the good prayers are <lb/>not in vain and that this is a <lb/>happy omen of God's loving <lb/>protection from all dangers. I have just heard that one at least <lb/>of the men to whom I gave Holy <lb/>Communion that morning was <lb/>killed the same night in the trenches. <lb/>You may be pleased to learn that <lb/>without ever having been a C.C. <lb/>I am now full P.P. of this <lb/>parish, the <seg type="foreign">Curí</seg> being away <lb/>at the war and no one to take <lb/>his place. (If Fr Tom wants a <lb/>good thing in parishes send him <lb/>on at once). Last evening I
            <pb n="8" facs="L1916_1096_img_3272_8"/>
              heard quite by chance that an <lb/>old woman was very ill, her family <lb/>evidently not thinking it worth the <lb/>trouble of sending for the priest. <lb/>Almighty God seemed to have left <lb/>the poor old creature alive till I <lb/>reached her and gave her the <lb/>Last Sacraments, for she died <lb/>almost before I got home. You <lb/>see my life has many con— <lb/>solations, and it is just as <lb/>well for this is a sad, sad war <lb/>of which you at home have <lb/>but the faintest idea; may the <lb/>good God end it soon. Thank you very much for the <lb/>interesting number of the I. Catholic. <lb/>I quite agree with all Fr O' Connor <lb/>says about the universal kindness <lb/>shown us by all the officers and men <lb/>great respect, but he wrote the rest <lb/>of his letter with pen well dipped <lb/>in ' <seg type="foreign"><seg type="unclear">Ecrulum de rosi</seg></seg>' (or was it a bottle <lb/>of red wine?) for I have not yet met a <lb/>chaplain who looks on the life as a pressure. <seg type="closer"> Much love to all, <lb/>from your loving Willie. </seg>
