Letter from Margaret Huxley to Thomas Percy Kirkpatrick relating to the proposed College of Nursing. While she believes that some points need alteration Huxley believes the scheme will help the nursing profession. Additionally, Huxley expresses concern at the nomination of Miss Hill of the Adelaide Hospital and also hopes that the Joint Committee will help nurses gain state registration.In 1915 Margaret Huxley (1856-1940) took over the position as matron of the Dublin University Women’s Voluntary Aid Detachment’s Hospital. The VAD was a section of the Red Cross used to train civilian nurses to provide medical assistance during the war. The following year Huxley was tending to casualties of the Easter Rising as she opened her own private nursing home, on Lower Mount Street.From 1910 until 1954 Thomas Kirkpatrick (1869-1954) served as the registrar for the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. He also served as the general secretary of the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland. He took a particular interest in what were then termed venereal diseases; to encourage his patients (many of whom were prostitutes) to attend, he held a clinic for women at a discreet early morning hour to facilitate anonymity.

 Saturday Grand Hotel Malahide Dear D r Kirkpatrick Thanks so much for letting me see your letter to Mr Stanley, I return it as requested, & at the same time send you a paper I received from Miss Haughton yesterday, it gives one a better idea as to the proposed Nursing College that is to be, with you I begin to think that they really mean to work for the betterment of nurses & nursing — there remains some points for alteration. I hear that Miss Hill of the Adelaide Hospt. has been nominated on the first Council, of all the Dublin Matrons she probably knows less than any one of them the difficulties &needs that obtain over here. Would you kindly keep Miss Haughton's paper until my return. Thanking you for all the trouble you are taking on our behalf & hoping you will still aim for State Registration. We need it badly.
