               <p>Letter from James Davidson (1877-1916) to his mother, Clara Davidson, informing her that he has finally reached his destination. Davidson writes about the long journey and the new living accommodations, which were increasingly uncomfortable as troops were crushed in everywhere. Davidson takes these new living arrangements as a sign that they are no doubt planning for something big which will require packing in as many soldiers as quickly as possible.This letter is part of a large correspondence from Captain James Davidson to his parents. Davidson, who was Managing Director of the Sirocco Engineering Works in Belfast, served with 13 Royal Irish Rifles and the Machine Gun Corps. His letters describe his experiences while training in England and serving in France. He was killed on 1 July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme.</p>

                12/4/16 My dearest Mother - I arrived at my <lb/>destination very late last night after <lb/>30 hours of continuous travelling. <lb/>The journey seems much worse on <lb/>the way back when one has nothing <lb/>pleasant to look forward to. We were <lb/>fortunate in getting a good crossing <lb/>but the train journey - 16 hours was <lb/>awfully tiresome. On arrival at <lb/>railhead I found out that the Coy <lb/>had been relieved &amp; was back in <lb/>reserve again so had not so far <lb/>to go to join it. The billets however <lb/>are by no means as comfortable <lb/>as where we were - troops are <lb/>being crushed in everywhere &amp; <lb/>although there is not the responsibility <lb/>of holding a part of the line I would <lb/>much prefer being where we were.
            <pb n="2" facs="L1916_1060_img_3156_2"/>
              I dare say from now on we shall <lb/>Have to content ourselves with any <lb/>old place for there is no doubt we <lb/>are preparing for something big &amp; <lb/>it will be a case of packing as many <lb/>troops as possible into the area. <lb/>Have not yet heard how long we <lb/>are to be in reserve but don't <lb/>suppose it will be for more than <lb/>a week or so. Have had a <lb/>long &amp; busy day of it with inspections <lb/>&amp; <seg type="unclear">c</seg>&amp; then Dermot Hill goes on leave <lb/>tomorrow morning which meant going <lb/>over no end of papers with him so <lb/>excuse this short note. Weather <lb/>awful - rain &amp; storm &amp; so cold - <lb/>it makes coming back feel all <lb/>the worse. <seg type="closer"> With fondest <lb/>love to all <lb/>Your loving son Jim </seg>
