Postcard from Lieutenant Kenneth Power, Prisoner of War at Gütersloh prison camp, Germany to his brother Mr Cyril Power SJ (1890-1980), who was a Jesuit scholastic studying philosophy at Stonyhurst, Lancashire, England. The Gütersloh prison camp postcard displays German censor marks. There is a faint boxed 'Eingang 9.5.16' cachet, which means the card entered the German censors' office on 9th May 1916 (where it would stay for a period of ten days ‑ to render useless any secret information sent by the prisoner). The second mark, a boxed 'F.a.' stands for 'Fristgemass abgefertigt', which means 'Dispatched within stipulated time'. The ringed cachet is the official 'Gutersloh Prison Camp' hand-stamp. The postmark (at top right) shows the card entered the postal system on 19th May 1916, which was exactly ten days after it was handed into the camp censors' office. On the reverse, there is a faint 'LONDON PAID' receiving mark in red - dated 30th May 1916. Lieutenant Kenneth Power R.F.A. was taken prisoner by the Germans near Hulluch when he was acting as a observing officer with the infantry while stationed in a quarry. Kenneth and Cyril Power were born in Dublin.
