                343 Winchester House  Old Broad Street  London    28<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> April 1916   Sir   I have the honour to offer my <lb/>services in any capacity for which <lb/>I may be suited.  I served for 27 years in the State <lb/>Railway Dep<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="underline">t</hi></hi> Gov<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="underline">t</hi></hi> of India &amp; was <lb/>specially selected for several important <lb/>posts. I built the Durban Railways <lb/>in 1911 and was rewarded with <lb/>the distinction of C.V.O   I have been in sole charge of survey <lb/>operations through the <sic>Sind</sic> desert <lb/>&amp; much of my life has been spent <lb/>in charge of construction operations <lb/>in out of the way jungles. I was <lb/>some years ago badly smashed up at <lb/>polo &amp; have been so knocked about <lb/>that I believe there were some doubts <lb/>as to whether I would even be fit <lb/>again but I have been making <lb/>myself fit &amp; can now hunt walk <lb/>shoot &amp; play almost all games  I have of course offered by services <lb/>through the India Office &amp; had an <lb/>interview at the War Office but the <lb/>objection to employing me appears at <lb/>present to be that I held too high &amp; <lb/>responsible posts in India to now <lb/>go into a subordinate position. <lb/>I have personally no objection to <lb/>serving even under those who were <lb/>my junior assistants. I have no <lb/>objection to working with my hands <lb/>at any menial job if by so doing <lb/>I can assist my country. I can drive <lb/>a motor but am not a skilled mechanic <seg type="closer"> I have the honour to be <lb/>Your most obedient servant  J.C. Lyle C.V.D <seg type="unclear">Doyle</seg></seg>
