<hi rend="underline">F50</hi> at Stafford. 41 Wolverhampton Rd. Stafford. 4.7.16 Dear Mr. Ryan, We have been wondering <lb/> a good deal how you are getting on & <lb/> how you like your new surroundings. <lb/> Father Moore called in last night <lb/> & said so far he had heard <lb/> nothing. This morning he sent a <lb/> message for me to call to see him. <lb/> I do so & it was to show me a <lb/> letter he had received from the <lb/> Chaplain. But as he lives a good <lb/> distance, almost 30 miles I think, it <lb/> did not give much news. He is <lb/> an old Cottonian (a College for boys in the

<lb/>Midlands) & it seems Fr. Moore & he were <lb/> there for a short time together — but his <lb/> younger brother was a classmate of <lb/> his. We were quite glad to hear it <lb/> because it seemed to make a link <lb/> still with you as we know <seg type="unclear">Coilín</seg> - my <lb/> brother was there a long time but of <lb/> course at a much later date. So we <lb/> trust to hear further details later. I have already sent you one <lb/> letter. I wrote it Saturday —but as <lb/> the address was doubtful I am not <lb/> sure that you have received it. <lb/> If you have & if I tell you the <lb/> same things again you must excuse <lb/> it because that is the reason. In it I told you I got to know <seg type="unclear">Mr.</seg><lb/> Duffy & Mr.Caralon (from Belfast) <lb/> by taking a message about collars <lb/> & ties etc for M <hi rend="superscript">rs</hi> Figgis. The <lb/> former said he knew you at any rate <lb/> by sight & I gave him a message fo r <lb/> you in case he sees you. <seg type="unclear">Mr</seg> Caralon
<pb n="3" facs="L1916_0737_img_225_3"/>
<lb/>said he was a good friend of yours. I was sorry you were taken away <lb/> in the first lot & not left till later - <lb/> there are still a good many here. But I <lb/> daresay you will like it better as you <lb/> will have discovered your other friends <lb/> down there there & others have gone on from here. I think the warder in the gate <lb/> was rather glad because he said <lb/> he is spared writing down your name. <lb/> He thought you were the most popular <lb/> in the barracks, he had to do it so <lb/> often. Father Moore happened to call <lb/> in Thursday night - the 29 <hi rend="superscript">th</hi>. He <lb/> said it was not the same place down <lb/> there now that all the nuts had <lb/> gone. M <hi rend="superscript">rs</hi>. & Miss Pearse came to Stafford <lb/> on Friday night & we were lucky to <lb/> see a good deal of them. Last night <lb/> they left for Shrewsbury en route for <lb/> Frongoch which they intend to <lb/> visit today, but I am glad to say they <lb/> are returning here for a short time.
<pb n="4" facs="L1916_0737_img_225_4"/>
<lb/>The priests here said the Masses on <lb/> Sunday & Monday for her two sons & she <lb/> was awfully pleased about it. She <lb/> told us a great many details. It was <lb/> very sad but she is so sweet & so <lb/> wonderfully brave. She said 'My loss is <lb/> an irreparable one but knowing what it <lb/> is, if I was asked to make the sacrifice <lb/> again tomorrow, I would do it just as gladly'. <lb/> She promised to send some mortuary cards. <lb/> I did not like to ask for one though I <lb/> wanted to do so badly but she turned to <lb/>me & said 'You shall have one - I wont <lb/> forget'. I was so thankful to have had <lb/> the opportunity of meeting her & I am <lb/> sure I will be different all my life for <lb/> having done so. I do hope your cold is better - if you <lb/> only had stayed a bit longer you would <lb/> have had more medicine & then probably <lb/> the cure would have been complete. If you <lb/> have to do your own washing be careful <lb/> not to put on anything damp or else you <lb/> will get it again. I wish I knew your new number - <lb/> I have asked my friend to ask Mr.O'Connell when <lb/> she writes to him & let me know. Goodbye for the present. <seg type="closer"> Yours very sincerely Kathleen Teebay. </seg>
