               <p>Letter from Henry H. Hanley to Lord Castletown (1849-1937) Hanley, as chairman of the Mallow recruitment committee, asks Lord Castletown (Bernard Edward Barnaby FitzPatrick) to preside over the distribution of 'Certificates of Honour' as an aid to recruitment. Sir Bernard Edward Barnaby FitzPatrick, 2nd Baron Castletown was a landlord, soldier, sportsman, and adventurer. In the 1900s, Lord Castletown helped in the establishment of the National University of Ireland, and he supported the Wyndham land act. A friend of Douglas Hyde, he gave financial assistance to the Gaelic League and formed the shortlived Celtic Association to foster Celtic culture.</p>

                Lackanalooha, Mallow.    9th, August, 1916.   My Lord,   As Hon. Secretary No. 2 of Mallow Recruiting Committee <lb/> and in charge of the Distribution of the 'Certificates <lb/> of Honour'. I am asked by Mr. R. E. Longfield, D. L. to <lb/> ask you preside as Chairman of our Meeting.   I have asked for the use of the Buttevant <lb/> Gymnasium Hall, Buttevant Barracks. Also, a Band <lb/> to give some entertainment and we have on hands for <lb/> Buttevant. 19.   Doneraile. 22. Due from Dublin for Churchtown <lb/> which is also in the Buttevant District 23.   This would leave a total of 64. which could be given <lb/> out under your Chairmanship at Buttevant.   Our total vouchers received to date 539. <lb/>'Certificates of Honour' issued. 456. <lb/>To be issued 83. <lb/>There are still numbers looking for them. <lb/>For five weeks in <sic>th</sic> Dublin office they inform me they <lb/> have issued 2.500.   Our meetings have been very successful. Mr. R. E. Longfield <lb/> D. L. has given us a great assistance and has signed <lb/> his name as D. L. This has given our meetings a new <lb/> life and we expect to attract great numbers later.   It is a great stimulus for recruiting. In our Mallow <lb/> district. Lt. O. Riordan. has done wonders and is getting <lb/> numbers of recruits.   I shall be pleased if your Lordship will act in <lb/> Buttevant and the date on which you would name for <lb/> our meeting I would like to know so that we may <lb/> frame the invitation cards for same.
