<p>Letter from Captain James Davidson (1877-1916) to his mother, Clara Mary Davidson regarding his life at the front. Davidson begins by apologizing for not reading much of his mother's letter. He goes on to tell her how well received the box of fruit was and asks that she does not send him any more clothes until he asks. Before signing off Davidson mentions the new brigadiers that have arrived. This letter is part of a large correspondence from Captain James Davidson to his parents. Davidson, who was Managing Director of the Sirocco Engineering Works in Belfast, served with 13 Royal Irish Rifles and the Machine Gun Corps. His letters describe his experiences while training in England and serving in France. He was killed on 1 July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme.</p>

6/12/15 My dearest Mother I was so sorry <lb/> to get your bad news about <lb/> Kathleen today — poor wee <lb/> girl she has had a trying <lb/> time of it but I do hope <lb/> this complication will pass <lb/> away completely soon &amp; <lb/> that your next letter will <lb/> bring better news. Father <lb/> was also evidently not at <lb/> all well but I hope he took <lb/> it in time &amp; that the cold <lb/> did not get down into his <lb/> chest. I am afraid dear <lb/> Mother I must confess that <lb/> I have not been able to read <lb/> a good deal of your letter <lb/> but I don't think there are <lb/> any points requiring special

reply. I was so pleased to get <lb/> the snap of Baby — I am afraid <lb/> I cant discover any resemblance <lb/> for one loses the expression. The box of apples &amp; pears <lb/> arrived safely 2 days ago <lb/> &amp; we have all enjoyed the <lb/> fruit so much. A good few <lb/> of the pears had gone bad but <lb/> the remainder although they had <lb/> bad spots were quite good &amp; <lb/>it is really marvellous how <lb/> well they travelled. The apples <lb/> are splendid —not one bad— <lb/> I gave a few to the people in the <lb/> café here where I am billeted <lb/> &amp; they said they had never tasted <lb/> such good apples in France. The 2 tubes of shaving soap from <lb/> Hoffmans also came so I <lb/> dont think anything has gone <lb/> wrong so far. As regards

clothing please dont send <lb/>me any more till I write <lb/> for them as so long as we are <lb/> in billets I can always get <lb/> washing done &amp; I must not <lb/> further increase my kit. There is however just one thing <lb/> more I would like sent out <lb/> &amp; that is 2 suits of pyjamas. <lb/> Tell Bella to pick out the best <lb/> of those I was wearing at home — <lb/><hi rend="underline">not</hi> the thick ones. Our new Brigadier has arrived — <lb/> Gen. Griffith. He seems to be <lb/> a capable man, is comparatively <lb/> young, active &amp; has been all <lb/> through the War. The poor old <lb/> Brigadier Gen. H.P. left for England <lb/> this morning. He was quite <lb/> overcome saying goodbye &amp; <lb/> we were all very sorry to see <lb/> him go. He is to report to <lb/> the War Office on his return &amp; <lb/> I understand is to get a good <lb/> billet at home. Weather mild <lb/> at present but horribly wet — <lb/> rains every day. It is <lb/> almost 11—30PM so must <lb/>close. Hoping for good <lb/> news of all in your next <seg type="closer"> Your loving son Jim </seg>
