               <p>This is a copy of a letter from Serjeant Alex Sullivan, Rosscarbery, Co. Cork to Gavan Duffy (1882-1951), in which he conveys his condolences on the execution of Roger Casement (1864–1916). States that 'these asses (the English) can learn nothing. They have made a martyr most stupidly, while abstaining from their hysterical performance would have been a good move for their own ends.'George Gavan Duffy was an Irish politician, barrister and judge. He unsuccessfully defended Roger Casement at his trial for high treason after the Easter Rising.</p>

My Dear <sic>Gorge</sic>,    I am exceedingly sorry for the disappointment <lb/> and worry that you have suffered. These asses can learn <lb/> nothing. They have made a 'martyr' most stupidly <lb/> while abstaining from their hysterical performance <lb/> wd. have been a good move for their own ends.   Come down to me and have some rest and <lb/> relaxation. Brooding over this business will do you <lb/> no good .....   I am at last resting ...
