A letter from Seán Mac Diarmada (1883-1916) to Thomas James (‘Tom’) Clarke (1858–1916), requesting any copies of last week's (April) “Nationality”, with the credit and receipt to be processed by Mr. Connolly. A handwritten note in pencil reads ‘Gave 18 copies (returned)’.Br. Allen has annotated in pencil on the back of the letter that the handwriting is that of Diarmuid Lynch (1878–1950), who was standing in for Seán Mac Diarmada on the staff of 'Nationality' some weeks before the Easter Rising took place.Seán Mac Diarmada was one of the key organisers of the Easter Rising. He signed the Proclamation of the Irish Republic and was executed on 12 May 1916 for his involvement in the Easter Rising. Tom Clarke helped found the Irish Volunteers in November 1913 and was one of the main figures behind the coup of 24 September 1914 against John Redmond. He was a key planner and instigator of the 1916 Easter Rising, served in the GPO garrison during the Easter Rising and was executed on 3 May 1916. Diarmuid Lynch served in the GPO garrison during the Easter Rising and was sentenced to death, but this was commuted to ten years penal servitude because of his American citizenship. Released on amnesty in June 1917, he was appointed Sinn Féin food controller, but was arrested in 1918 and deported to the USA, where he became National Secretary of the Friends of Irish Freedom (FOIF).
