He outlines his professional experience in legal practice. He also mentions his family's involvement in active military service.Sir Robert Chalmers was sent to Ireland as replacement under-secretary for Sir Matthew Nathan (1862-1939), who had resigned along with Augustine Birrell, his chief secretary, following the outbreak of the Easter Rising in 1916.

I was admitted Solicitor on the 14th December 1915 and have since that date practised continuously at this address and in Drogheda as an active member of the firm of Thomas Gerrard & Co. I have experience of both High Court and County Court business and am Solicitor for the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. My firm is well known in Dublin and throughout Ireland. I am ofcourse over military age. All my brothers and my only nephew ( except those who have been killed in the war ) are at present on active service.
