               <p>Letter from Archibald Acheson (1841-1922), 4th Earl of Gosford, to Sir Matthew Nathan (1862-1939). Acheson writes of the proposed appointment of J. Mausergh Palmer to the position of Deputy Lieutenant, Armagh, following the death of Captain Shelton (Captain Ralph MacGeough Bond Shelton) who passed away in March 1916.Sir Matthew Nathan was the under secretary for Ireland from 1914 to 1916. In 1916 Nathan offered his resignation following the outbreak of the Easter Rising. Archibald Acheson was the Lord Lieutenant of county Armagh and member of the House of Lords. He was appointed Honorary Colonel of the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Irish Fusiliers from 1899.</p>
