Letter from an unknown 'M' to James Ryan (1891-1970) during his imprisonment in Stafford. The correspondent offers assistance to Ryan, asking him on behalf of the other prisoners from Wexford whether there was any item they needed that the correspondent could send (Ryan was born in Wexford). Given the familiar terms of address used, 'M' is probably a close friend or relation of Ryan's. James Ryan studied medicine in University College Dublin. He was appointed chief medical officer in the GPO during the Easter Rising. After the Rising he was imprisoned in Stafford and, later, Frongoch, and was released in August 1916. Ryan was later a founder member of Fianna Fáil and a government minister.
