               <p>Letter from Philomena (Phyllis) Frances Ryan (1895-1983) to an imprisoned James Ryan (1891-1970). She refers to letters and parcels that she had sent, and asks him what items he would like to be sent in future. Phyllis also fills Ryan in on news of friends and family.James Ryan studied medicine in UCD. He was appointed chief medical officer in the GPO during the Easter Rising. After the Rising he was imprisoned in Stafford and, later, Frongoch, and was released in August 1916. Ryan became a founder member of Fianna Fáil and a government minister. Philomena (Phyllis) Frances Ryan was James Ryan's youngest sister. She worked as a chemist, and later became the second wife of Seán T. O'Kelly, president of Ireland. (Kelly had been married to Phyllis's sister until her death.)</p>

              pm 14/6/16 19 Ranalagh Road, <time>Friday night</time> My dearest Jim, I sent you a parcel of food early in the week, <lb/> and we had sent you a parcel of clothes earlier. Let us know <lb/> next time you write whenever you write whether you <lb/> got them or not. I shall send another parcel tomorrow <lb/> of the rest of the things you asked for, and anything <lb/> else I can pick up. Let us know when writing <lb/>too what you would like particularly. Can you smoke <lb/> yet. Would you like some cooked meat, ham or <lb/>something. Do you want any more books. If we <lb/> send you cheese or that sort of thing, ought we send <lb/>you bread &amp; butter too. Would you like bread &amp; butter from <lb/> home. Must everything be cooked &amp; ready to eat. Well, as to news. Min went home this morning. <lb/> She will only stay till Tuesday, she is having a <lb/>rest. She took Maura Power down with her, who is <lb/>going to stay there awhile. Martin also went who <lb/> has been up here since Monday. I am here alone <lb/> Nancy Power stays the nights always of course. I <lb/>am working for the exam. I have the Botany pass <lb/>on 14 <hi rend="superscript">th</hi> June (it has been put back) and Chemistry <lb/> September of course. Tis not very easy to work indeed. <lb/> Nell &amp; Kate are still in Mountjoy. They are not being <lb/>sent to England after all I think. They may get out soon
            <pb n="2" facs="L1916_0388_img_165_2"/>
              as no one knows what there is against them. We can <lb/> see them every day, and they are having a fairly good <lb/> time. We also see our other friends such as <lb/>Sean Z &amp; Dinny, who are all in splendid form. <lb/> Dick Hickey was in this evg. He left this letter <lb/>he took away your safety razor to have it fixed. <lb/> We will send it to you if you are allowed to <lb/>have it, or if you want it. Let us know too. I wonder if you got all the letters we wrote to you. If <lb/>you did you have all the news; otherwise you must <lb/> have missed a good deal of it. Agnes of course <lb/> is at home. Everything here is as usual, as <lb/> far as women go, the men of course are <hi rend="underline">nil</hi>. <lb/> Maureen has been sacked from Charleville, of course <lb/> not till after June; otherwise everyone continues <lb/> as usual. There is no Feis in Wexford — no one <lb/>left in Wexford to work it. There will be an Oireactás, <lb/>I believe at the arranged time. Chris will be <lb/>married in the summer I think of course very <lb/> privately if at all, perhaps not at all if you are not all <lb/>home. Agnes will hardly be able to manage hers <lb/> unless she changes her affections. Of course she may <lb/> have <hi rend="underline">her</hi> man out by then. We dont know yet. <lb/> Stan is out in Rathfarnham having a rest. Goodbye. <lb/> I shall send a parcel tomorrow. Send any message you <lb/> want here the next time you write anywhere. <lb/> Everyone keeps asking for you always. <seg type="closer"> Much love. <hi rend="underline">Phyllis.</hi> </seg>
