The letter is an acknowledgement of a letter sent from MacNeill to Augustine Birrell (1850-1933), the chief secretary of Ireland, regarding the use of Robert Louis Stevenson's novel 'Kidnapped' on the school syllabus.Andrew Philip Magill (1871 - 1941) acted as private secretary to Augustine Birrell (1850-1933) the Chief Secretary for Ireland. Magill assumed the role in 1913 and continued after the resignation of Birrell in 1916. John Gordon Swift MacNeill (1849 - 1926) was a jurist and politician. He was MP for South Donegal from 1887 until 1918.</p>
