This is a letter from John Harold Smith-Wright, lieutenant commander of the Royal Navy, to the secretary, Dublin Castle. The letter concerns a letter sent by Wright regarding compensation for travel expenses for his servant, Violet Williams. At the time this letter was sent, there was no active chief secretary in Dublin Castle as Henry Duke (1855-1939) did not take up the position until 5 July 1916, following the resignation of Augustine Birrell (1850-1933) in the immediate aftermath of the Easter Rising.
