A letter from Earnest Blythe (1889-1975) to George Gavan Duffy (1882-1951). Blythe requests Gavan Duffy to represent him in court as he is to be prosecuted for failure to report to police in Abingdon, England. Included in the letter is a transcript of the deportation order which was sent by Major-General L.B. Friend to Blythe, 7 April 1916. George Gavan Duffy was an Irish politician, barrister and judge. He unsuccessfully defended Roger Casement at his trial for high treason after the Easter Rising. Ernest Blythe was an organiser for the Irish Volunteers. He had been arrested under the Defence of the Realm Act. He was released from prison in England before the Easter Rising but was rearrested there during Easter week 1916.

You are provided with a single ticket to Crewe & 13/- railway fare to Abingdon and you will proceed forth with to Abingdon on arrival there you will notify your arrival to the local police and your new place of residence to the competent Military Authority through the local police.
