A letter from Patrick Pearse (1879-1916) to Seán Thomas O'Kelly (1882-1966), politician and later president of Ireland. In this letter, written two days before the Easter Rising and on the eve of the original date for the Rising, Pearse asks if O'Kelly can provide accommodation for the night for himself and his brother William (1881-1916), who was also later executed.Patrick Pearse was a writer, a teacher and one of the leaders of the Easter Rising, 1916. He was a key member of the IRB military council, a signatory of the proclamation of the Irish Republic (which he read outside the GPO). As president of the provisional government, it was Pearse who called the surrender. He along with 15 others, was executed shortly after surrender. Seán Thomas O'Kelly was a founding member of the Irish Volunteers. A former editor of Arthur Griffith's newpaper, An Claideamh Soluis, O'Kelly became the national secretary of the Gaelic League in 1915. O'Kelly departed on a fund raising mission to the United States in 1915, returning to serve as Aide-de-Comp for Padraig Pearse during the 1916 Rising. He was incarcerated in Frongoch and Wandsworth prisons alongside other volunteers after the Easter Rising.
