A letter from politician and intellectual Desmond FitzGerald (1888-1947) to his wife Mabel FitzGerald (née Washington McConnell) (1884-1958) assuring her that he is well in prison. He inquires about news of the family and discusses the arrangements of his proposed release from prison in March 1916.This letter was written while Desmond FitzGerald was serving a six month sentence in Mountjoy prison having been convicted under the new Defence of the Realm legislation for making a seditious speech. He later served in the GPO during the Easter Rising, being placed in charge of the garrison's food supply. He initially escaped arrest after the Rising but was soon rounded up and imprisoned in Mountjoy, Dartmoor, Maidstone, Lewes and Portland.

And give her news when she of is going on her corporal works of mercy. Go and see McCabe in A. Hill. You knew him at the camp. Cheer him up. I have seen his friend here. Denis presents to me I found the following Tuesday & it was a tremendous blessing to me. I hope all went well at the convention and that your catering was a success in the evening. Give me allnews news in detail in your letter. Keep a diary & send it in & complete other letters in it. Hope all goes well in B. & Kerry. and that my dear ones are all well. Get MacCarthy or someone to clean & vaseline my bike & that other plaything in Meath Rd. Have Dolly to stay with you as often as she can. I know she would cheer you up. It must be dreadfully lonely down there where you know no one. I hope everyone is very nice to you. I am dreadfully fond of my dear one all the time here. I am due out last day of March Friday in Lent. But it is sweet things I crave for most & dream about them everynight. Remember what I said in Irish. There might be a chance next time.
